A New York web designer would say, over the past decades, the world has evolved tremendously from living local to trading international. The development of social media and mobile applications brought people together in a seamless manner. Communication and merchandise trading with the world is as easy as a click – what we call the internet, also what we call e-commerce.

To attract more customers, local businesses have gone from being on the hot spot on the main road for foot traffic to a home’s basement for phone/internet orders, from advertising in newspapers to search engine optimization. The internet has given many of us the opportunities that weren’t available to our grandparents’ generation.

From time to time, we receive web design RFP (request for proposal) from retired senior citizens across the nation interested in building ecommerce websites. When we sit down for the initial web design discovery session, some of them explain their motives “that’s how you can get the most out of your 401(k)” with a content and wise smile on their face. “When you are 60, you are free to do anything you want. And there is so much to explore on the internet. Everyone has a piece of the pie, I want one too.”

It’s very true. An e-commerce situation is perfect for this wise group who has no strings attached like some of us do when working a 9-5 job. Working an online store is the most convenient option for senior citizens to make a (better) living by occupying their time with ROI activities while doing all of this in the comfort of their home.

Some decides to sell products and manage a small amount of inventory in their basement; some likes to set up a website to resell and drop ship products; some likes to utilize their lifelong experience and create a Q&A blog to work as a paid consultant; some even design an online take out form with us, to sell homemade pizza and catering goodies to local homes.

Whichever the choice, it creates another option for consumers and allows users to conveniently make a purchase. Any people, myself included, would say that e-commerce has been a major part of our lives for decades, transforming trade into one of the easiest and quickest things to do, anywhere, anytime, with anyone you wish.

This group of relaxed people, is mostly fond of the choice of using the web. “If we do well, in 5 years we will sell it; If we are bored again, we will call you and do something else together!”, one of them said after the launch of one of the e-commerce content management solution project we worked on.

Our response? “Old people, you rock! You give us so much web design insights in new york marketing!”
